Ely

This will be a really short blog because honestly we didn't do much in Ely but I wanted to post the pics anyways! About 20 minutes away from base there is a town called Ely, we had heard people talking about it and how nice it was. There is also a huge cathedral there, so on one of Brandon's days off we decided to go check it out. We had met several people who lived out in Ely and drive in to base everyday. As we drove there I decided I wouldn't want to do that! Although it was a beautiful drive with views of the canal lined with boats, and fields of crops and flowers, I wouldn't want to chance those roads in the winter. It was a winding road, with no shoulder (of course that is any road in England) but not only was there no shoulder there were steep (and deep) ditches on either side of the road, they are there to keep rain water from flooding the roads. Which makes sense but it you slide off the road for any reason you are going straight down into a deep waterfilled ditch...no thank you. I will take my no shoulder, shrub and fence lined roads thank you very much! Anywho back to Ely, which is pronounces ELEE not ELI...if that makes sense how I typed that! It was a cute town with lots of shops, unfortunately we arrived at just before 5pm so all the shops were closing for the day. That is one thing we have found here nothing is open late or early. They run on a schedule to suit the owner not the customers, which is so different from the states. Although we couldn't shop we did look at the menus for a few pubs that we want to check out soon. Then we walked down to the cathedral. I was surprised at how big it was, each town has an old stone church, but this was massive and gorgeous.

We didn't get to go inside that day because it was...surprise surprise CLOSED! Oh well I liked just getting to walk around the gardens and the outside area.
